One of the most spectacular walks that you can take on Maui is not through a forest or on a beach, rather it’s on a secluded road located in the foothills of Haleakala.  The Thompson Road Walk located in Keokea offers breathtaking bi-coastal views of Maui, Lanai, Kaho’olawe, and Molokini. The views will absolutely take your breath away and give you a true understanding of the phrase “Maui nō ka ‘oi(Maui is the best).

The Best Times to Stroll

The best times to complete this walk are just after sunrise (around 8:00 or 8:30 am) and just before sunset (around 5:00 pm).

Why at Sunrise?

Going on the Thompson Road Walk is best just after sunrise because the sun is just beginning to peak over the top of Haleakala. The playful morning light interacts with the rolling hills creating soothing patterns of soft light on the slopes of Haleakala. You’ll get a chance to see the horses on the many ranches along the walk.   They are really cute, friendly, and in a playful mood in the morning.  Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the gorgeous bi-coastal views as you welcome the Good Maui Morning.

A Great Post "Sunrise on Haleakala" Walk

Another reason to go on this walk is that it makes for a great activity post “Sunrise on Haleakala”.  What better way to cap off one of the most spectacular sunrises in the world than to go on one of the island’s most spectacular walks.

Traveling Aloha Pro Tip

After viewing the sunrise on Haleakala and going on the Thompson Road Walk you’ve probably worked up quite an appetite.  Support a local business and go grind (go and eat) at Grandma’s Coffee House. It’s right across the street.

Why at Sunset?

I really enjoying going on this walk just before sunset.  The reason? It’s just so beautiful. At sunset the sky begins to change colors.  The normally blue sky becomes a canvas for the artist-up-above as it’s painted shades or orange, pink, and purple.  As the sun begins to dip into the ocean the mountains are tinted tangerine orange, and as you gaze into the horizon you can can watch the sunlight dance on the ripples in the water.  The view is so amazing that I often find myself saying “Maui nō ka 'oi.”

Oprah Spotting

You may have read that Oprah has a property here.  Please remember that she is a person like you and I.  Please be respectful of her privacy and property. If you are lucky enough to see her.  Give her a Shaka Sign (Hang Loose Sign), a smile, and wish her aloha, but do not be rude or intrusive.

Getting Here

Getting to Thompson road takes around 30 minutes from Kahului Airport.  The best spot to park is across the street from Grandma’s Coffee House. Thompson Road is the first left turn after Grandma’s.  You will immediately come across a fork in the road. Take the right in the fork to continue on Thompson Road. If you go to the left you will head towards Kula Hospital.

How to Travel Aloha

Please remember that this is a residential road.  Like everywhere you visit on Maui you should please remember to be respectful of your surroundings.  Please do not lot litter, venture onto private property, or feed the animals. If you come across any cars please move over to the side to let them pass.  This is a road first. The most important thing to remember is to Keep Traveling Aloha!
