In October of 2010 everything changed quickly after we met. By early 2011 we were madly in love and beginning to go on adventures together within Hawaii and to California. Going to festivals, hiking, visiting friends and family, and pursuing adventure. The following year we went to Burning Man together (Ryan’s first/Surina’s third), did more island hopping, and went back to California. By 2013 we were ready to go big or go home. We quit our jobs and traveled for four months in India, Italy, and Spain. We continue to travel every year, sometimes multiple times a year. We continue to push one another to overcome fears (mostly Ryan’s fear of heights), to be better people, to help others, and to spread Aloha. Now we are both full time teachers on Maui and we travel during most of our school breaks. When we aren’t traveling, we are loving and living the Hawaiʻi life.
The first thing you should know about me is that I was born and raised in Hawaiʻi. I grew up running around barefoot, going to the beach, and talking pidgin on the island of Oʻahu. Really, the first thing you should know about me is that I am afraid of heights, but I love flying. It doesn’t make sense, right? How can someone who is afraid of heights love to fly? The answer: I just fell in love with it the first time I jumped onto an airplane to visit one of the neighbor islands with my family. Flying was exciting. I loved pretending that I was Superman when I looked out of the window. Family and friends would greet me at the airport with lei and gifts. And I got to visit someplace new. I never lost that boyhood excitement. I still feel like Superman when I look out the window. I love picking up little trinkets on my travels. Most of all I never grew tired of visiting someplace new. Another thing that you should know about me is that I always wanted to fall in love. I am a hopeless romantic who finally found his one after waiting for 28 years. I spend each day trying my best to fill her life with lots of hugs, kisses, and happiness. As I travel the world with her I hope to spread that love and aloha with everyone we meet.20 Posts
Even though I was born and raised in Sacramento, California, I was destined for island life. In fact, island life is in my blood. My dad was born and raised in Fiji Islands and I have family on both my maternal and paternal sides spread throughout Polynesia. So, when I first started visiting friends in Hawaiʻi I knew it would one day be my home. I loved island life, the land, the culture, the people, and especially the spirit of Aloha, so it should come as no surprise that I fell in love with a local boy and we have made Hawaiʻi our home-base. As much as I love Hawaiʻi, I also love teaching and I truly believe that there is no better education than traveling. When I was growing up I had hardly traveled outside of California. In fact, my first time on an airplane was when I was 18 and I JUMPED OUT OF IT. Growing up, I hungered for travel and adventure and as soon as I was able to I started trying to fill that craving, starting with Skydiving. I still love and long for more travel and adventure!12 Posts
